The First Date
Gentleman, you can never go wrong with flowers. Even if your date isn’t really into flowers, the fact that you take the time to pick them out and show her what a keeper you are is sure to get your further than if you were to show up without them. But make sure you don’t go too far. Red roses may be the ultimate symbol of romance, but bringing them along on a first date could be a little intense. Stick to daisies to make her feel girlish and giddy.
Now for the ladies, on to that eternal question of what to wear on the first date. You want your beau to view you as sexy but sophisticated, and not too uptight. But most of all, you want him to like what he sees. The wardrobe landmines for first date attire are enough to trip up even the most fashion savvy, so dress for the occasion. Don’t wear a miniskirt to a cinema date and don’t try to get away with dress trousers at a late-night dinner. Find your happy medium, and remember, a little cleavage is key but stay away from blouses and dresses that are strapless, have spaghetti straps or are too low-cut.
Several Dates In
If you’ve been seeing someone for a while, but not long enough to call it a relationship, there are simple ways to pamper him or her. This transitional period can be a little tricky, but you’ll navigate it with ease if you have been paying attention. A small “just because” gift is a great way to let the other person know that you enjoy his or her company. Just remember to keep it small — no jewellery and no clothing.
To figure out what would be appropriate, think about the conversations you’ve had recently with the other person. Is there a movie that he’s been dying to see? If so, buy the tickets and surprise him. Is there a particular brand of wine she wants to try? Show up for the next date with a bottle in hand. Price isn’t always the most important thing; in fact, in this case, buying an expensive gift could actually do more harm than good. On the other hand, the more thoughtful you can be the better.
Special Occasions
Anniversaries, birthdays, and other special occasions are your chance to show your creative side. If there were ever an occasion for a dozen roses, a heartfelt Valentine’s card or a tasteful piece of jewellery, it’s this one. Especially if you are in a committed relationship, nothing that you can think of would be over the top. It is best, however, to give a gift that shows how much time and thought you put into it. So alongside that box of chocolates or tickets to a show, write a poem or make little origami cranes to show that you’re willing to do think outside of the box — even if it involves doing something that you may not be so good at — just to show that you care.
